NEWS ABOUT HARBOUR

BOARD MEMBER’S PROTEST. After discussing the matter in committee at the request of Mr J. W. Greenslade, members of the Gieymouth Chamber of Commerce at yesterday afternoon’s meeting agreed to the following resolution, submitted bj Mr Greenslade: — “That this Chamber of Commerce deplores the fact that a Press Association message had gone tluoughout New Zealand suggesting that a ban had been placed on the port by the big shipping companies.” Mr Greenslade declared that such news being broadcast amounted to fouling their own nest, and it was next to intimating to New Zealand that the port was unable to take snipping. The West Coast was really going ahead. Outsiders, he said, could see that that was so. Consequently Coasteis, and newspapers, should be more ciicumspect in sending out any messages damning the port. Mr Greenslade admitted that the district had had its little difficulties, but he maintained that they had been only temporary, and that none should damn the district in the eyes of the community. In connection with the wording of the motion, Mr' Bush, a Press representative, explained that as it was not definitely known -whether Hie broadcasting of the state of affairs pertaining in Greymouth was due to a Press Association message, or a Press message, the -wording of the resolution required re-consideration. Finally, a motion passed was, “That this Chamber deplores the fact that a Press Association message had been sent throughout New Zealand, suggesting that a ban had been placed on Greymouth Harbour.”
