MEETINGS

UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB. The annual meeting of the United Football Club was held last evening in the Club’s pavilion, Mr. G. Kear presiding over a good attendance of supporters. The annual report and balance-sheet, which was read and adopted, showed the Club to have passed through a successful year. Finances were sound and showed a credit balance. Reference was made to the loss the Club had suffered through the death of a promising young player, Gordon Fergusson. The report also stated that during the season the Club lost the services, through transfer, of Messrs. F. V. Dennehy (secretary of the Social Committee), and Williams (a senior player). The following officers were elected for the coming season: —President: Mr. George Kear (re-elected); VicePresidents: Mrs. J. McLeod, Messrs. W. Weening and J. Rodgers; Secretary and Treasurer: Mr. A. Hughes; Club Captain: Mr. T. P. Ryan; Committee: Officers, coaches of each team, and captain and vice-captain. It was decided to enter senior, junior, third and fourth grade teams in the Union’s competitions. The Club’s senior team will open the season by playing Excelsions on Saturday next, at Greymouth, and the juniors will play Excelsior juniors at Hokitika on the same day. It was decided to hold a general training night on Thursday, when the grading of players will be carried out. Ten new members were elected.

After the meeting a presentation was made to two members who have had long associations with the Club— Mr. A. Jamieson, who was married recently, and Mr. C. Neville, who is to be married shortly. The presentation to each, of a silver tea-set, was made by Mr. G. Kear, the President, who spoke highly of the services both had rendered the United Club and the game.

GREYMOUTH AUTOMOBILE ASSN. The monthly meeting of the Executive of the Greymouth Automobile Association was held last evening. An apology for absence was received from the President/ Dr. McKay. Mr. G. Harker was voted to the chair. Correspondence was dealt with in regard to the Fox River Bridge. The material is now being carted to the river bed .and it is hoped to start work on the bridge after Easter. The Association decided to give the Arthurs Pass-Cass deviation full support till this pprtion of the road to Canterbury is made a first class motoring highway, which will allow Coast motorists to visit Canterbury without undue delay. It was decided to ask the Main Highways Board to bitumen the KaroroParoa Road, and widen the Camerons Road for half a mile near the railway station; straighten up the Omoto-Kai-ata Road, alter the road at Kamaka railway crossing, and re-grade and widen the cuttings at Sisters Hills on the road to Ngahere. It was also decided that the Minister of Public Works be waited on by the Association when visiting Grey and asked for a grant for the Haupiri Junct. and Haupiri Road; further grants for the bridges on the Roto-manu-Inchbonnie Road and a continuance of the work on the InchbonnieMitchells section of road.

It was decided to send delegates to Canterbury to discuss matters regarding the deviation of the Bealey Road.

The Secretary reported that no reply had been received from the Borough Council regarding the electric light pole at the corner of Tainui and Chapel Streets and the removal of the Band Rotunda.

The secretary reported that a driver of a car from Brunnerton district had been reported to the Association and a letter had been sent him but no reply had been received. It was decided that unless a reply be received before next meeting that proceedings be taken to protect other users of the roads. 1 GREYMOUTH LADIES’ GOLF CLUB The annual meeting of the Ladies’ Branch of the Greymouth Golf Club was Held last evening, the captain, Mrs. Hannan, presiding over an attendance of Mesdames McCarthy, Smith, Brown, Fogarty, and Thorpy and Misses Reynolds, Pratt, Tennent, Kilgour and Doogan. The annual report was read as follows:— I beg to submit the following report of the Ladies’ Branch of the Greymouth Golf Club for the season 1929.— Finances —The accounts for the year show a profit of £l6/3/li. At the beginning of the season there was a credit balance of £6l/18/11 in the Bank, and at the close of the season the credit was £75/15/2. Although this shows a profit on the year’s workings it is not as 'large as it would have been had not the wet weather and the earthquake period interfered. Matches —The match programme,

although many alterations were necessary, successfully concluded. It is pleasing to state that the trophies were well distributed amongst the members in both divisions. Inter-Club matches were played with the Hokitika Club in Hokitika and locally. It was unfortunate that the Greymouth ladies were not able to send a team to the West Coast Championships held in Westport, but owing to the upheaval at tht-l time players did not feel inclined to travel. General—The new system of handicapping brought into force proved quite successful and although conditions were not conducive to good play, we have pleasure in congratulating several players who reduced their handicaps. Resignations have been received from four members, but it is hoped that new players will be elected to fill these vacancies. We have to thank

those persons who presented trophies during the season and the Press for its assistance during the year. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: Captain, Mrs. A. Smith; secretary, Miss Reynolds; handicap-manageress, Miss N. Tennent; committee, Mrs, Fogarty and Miss Pratt. Votes of sympathy were accorded to Misses Irvine and Berry who had sustained bereavements during the year.

It was decided that the opening day Saturday, April 5 be a general tea day. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the outgoing office holders. HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. [OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, March 29. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening, present: The Mayor (Mr

Perry), Crs. T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, E. W. Heenan, Dr. Teichelmann, J. L. Turner, G. Heinz, Jas. King, D. J. Evans. An apology was received for the absence of Cr. Armstrong. From the hon. secretary, Royal Livesaving Society, Canterbury Centre, drawing attention to the desirability when making appointments of bath custodians, of appointing only such persons as are qualified life-saveis. The N.Z. Refrigerating Coy., Christchurch wrote advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of February, 1930, viz., eight

sheep. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Hokitika, wrote forwarding copy of Order-in-Council, vesting Reserves No. 149, 150, 151, and 152, in the Hokitika Borough Council in trust for Municipal Endowment purposes (N.Z. Gazette No. 18, 13th. March, 1930, page 746). The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote that arrangements had been made for public enquiry to be held on behalf of the Town Planning Board in the Borough Council Chambers, Greymouth, the Mayor and Town Clerk to be delegates at the meeting. Mr J. Stewart, Hampden Street, applied for water service connection to Section 1275, Park and Davie Streets. —Request granted. Jas. Duncan, builder, applied for permission to erect suspension verandah at new show at the corner of Revell and Weld Streets. —Request granted. The Main Highways Board wrote re extra highways.—Received and application to be made to include street to Post Office.

The secretary of All Saints Church Committee wrote asking for permission to construct a septic tank for the new hall. —Consent granted, subject to the approval of Health Inspector.
