FIRE OUTBREAKS

HOUSE DESTROYED. [per press association. .l INVERCARGILL, March 28. At about four o’clock this morning, a seven-roomed wooden house situated on East Road, and owned and occupied by F. W. Ellis, the well known racehorse trainer, was totally destroyed by fire. The house was occupied only by Ellis and two boys at the time of the outbreak, but even these were able to snatch a few clothes only, in order to escape from the building, which was blazing fiercely when the occupants awoke. The house was sheltered from the westerly wind by a high belt of trees, and this fact, together with the efforts of a bucket brigade, prevented the fire from spreading to several stables and outhouses which were adjacent to the main building. Since the residence was outside the boundary of the Invercargill Fire Brigade’s activities, there was no means of subduing the blaze, and the house was soon razed to the ground. Nothing whatever was saved. The building was covered by a £9OO insurance policy and the contents by a £4OO policy. BOROUGH DESTRUCTOR. PALMERSTON N., March 29. An outbreak of fire occurred at the Borough destructor building last evening. Pumping from a. large pond nearby, the brigade effected a good save, confining the damage to the roof and rear portion.

FURNITURE FACTORY. BRISBANE, March 29. Twenty thousand pounds damage resulted from a fire which destroyed Coleman’s furniture factory and a largo residence adjoining, in the west end of the city.
