THREE WEEKS IN VAULT
MAN’S TERRIBLE ORDEAL. A man who had apparently lived for three weeks in the vaults of St. James’ Parish Church, Wetherby, without food or drink, was found there recently. The stories of children that there was a man under the church went unheeded until a man working in the vaults said he saw something move and a search was made. The man was Thomas Speck, aged 66, who is well educated and was at one time a successful commercial traveller. Latterly he had been doing odd jobs. Ho was semi-conscious when found and could only ask for water. He recovered somewhat in the infirmary, and told the doctor that as he was penniless he entered the vaults for warmth and went to sloe)). If was dark when he awoke and he could not find his way out. He appeared lo remember nothing more.
