CIGARETTE TAXES
£72,000,000 FOR U.S. BUDGET. NEW YORK, February 1. Cigarette smoking in the United States increased 13 per cent, last year over 1528, and yielded the Government £7“ 000,000 in taxes or £8,000,000 more than 1928. Tax receipts from all tobacco manufactures, cigars, etc., totalled £90,000,000. North Carolina, which led .all the other States in cigarette manufacture, produced 00 per cent- of the nations total. The cigarette increase is attributed largely to women, who now smoko in trains and other public places, and even on the strpets.
