TIMBER INDUSTRY
MANUNUI RESOLUTIONS. [special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, March 27. A meeting of timber workers at Manunui last evening passed a resolution that in view of the serious economic position of the sawmilling industry, affecting the employment of 7305 workers and their dependents, an immediate and thorough investigation be made into the cause of the depression of the tiniber trade. It was also suggested that the question of railway freights, high royalties and high bank rates for financial accommodation be gone into and that the uneconomical system used in dividing timber areas for milling purposes, entailing the maximum outlay of capital with a minimum return be discussed..
The meeting expressed the opinion that timber dealers should be prohibited from importing soft wood into New Zealand when there were ample supplies available for all ordinary industrial uses.
