HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. [OUR own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, March 28. The committee met last evening. Present: Mr A. C. Armstrong (chairman), Mrs J. H. Wilson, Messrs W. H. Shannon, R. J. Redder, J. J. Breeze, H. W. R. Sweney, W. E. Richards, J. Conning (hon. sec.), F. Chesterman. It was reported that Mr W. H. Shannon had been selected to represent the Committee and Education Board on the High School Board of Governors, rendered vacant by the death of the lion. H. L. Michel. Mr Shannon thanked the Board for the honour conferred on him. The Secretary of the Board wrote that Mr Honeybell would take up his duties as relieving teacher at Hokitika on April 2. The Director of the Division of Dental Hygiene wrote thanking the Comihittee for its work in connection with the clinic at Hokitika. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Kumara School Committee stating that £3 would be voted towards the dental clinic as soon as the dental officer- is available for Kumara.

The Committee unanimously refused to receive a printed' circular advocating the abolition of conscription in New Zealand. The appointment of a teacher to fill the position rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr Partridge was proceeded with, and Mr James L. Menzies, of Burwood, Christchurch, was selected by the Committee. —Mr Menzies is married, with three children, has excellent credentials and served three and a-half years at the Great War. The Rector’s report showed a good attendance in both departments, the roll number of the Secondary Department being just double that of five years ago; the bicycle shed was being extended; the grass in the new section of the lawn is coming away nicely; the sports on Wednesday, March 19, were very successful, and two cricket matches against teams from Greymouth were both won by our boys. Dr Baird presented a case of books for the library, and Master George Delbridge a framed photograph of the old school. —Report adopted. It was resolved to forward a Jettei of thanks to Dr Baird for the library books; to Mr W. H. Gifford for fitting up a wireless set at the school to enable the children to hear the address of Rear-Admiral Byrd at Dunedin; and to Georg'e Delbridge. • HOKITIKA FIRE BOARD.

The annual meeting of the Hokitika Fire Board was held last night. Present: Messrs J. J. Breeze, Bain, Green, Elcock and Braddon. Mr Elcock was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Reference was made to the deatn or Hon. H. L. Michel, who for many years was Chairman of the Board and was r connected almost all his life with the Fire Brigade. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed, the members standing in silence. Mr Braddon was appointed to represent the Borough in the late Mr Michel’s place.. He was duly welcomed by the members, Mr Braddon’s connection with the brigade making him eminently qualified for the position. x Leave of absence was granted tne nightwatchman (Mr Ridland) for the winter months, during which he will be employed at the Lake Kanieri Hatchery as curator. The Hokitika Brigade applied for a grant of £2O towards the travelling expenses of delegates to the annual conference—Granted. A report was received from the Inspector of Fire Brigades regarding also a letter respecting fire insurance motor transport. 1 A report of the Fire Brigades’ Conference at Whangarei was> received; premiums. The Superintendent’s report showed there had been three fires in the town during the past year, one being serious. Three hundred feet of canvas hose was required; had .inspected a motor i engine at the Conference, recommending the purchase of 100 feet of rubber-lined hose. It was resolved to purchase 300 feet of hose, also to purchase a motor fire engine from the Napier Fire Brigade. The question of procuring rubber-lined hose was deferred. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment, and it was resolved that the Minister of Internal Affairs be approached with the object of obtaining permission for an overdraft at the bank. <■
