NEW SOUTH WALES MINERS I AWARD’S LEGALITY DOUBTED (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, March 14. A steady volume of applications in writing are being received by the colliery proprietors from employees and also from unemployed. A number of personal applications for work are also being made at the city and coalfields offices. The coal owners are of opinion that the reluctance of many of the men to apply will disappear when they learn of the prospects of their old jobs going to others. (Recd. March 15, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 15. Applications for work in the Northern Collieries have been received in sufficient numbers to render possible the re-opening of some mines. Canberra messages, however, state that the (foal-owners may be compelled by the Federal Cabinet to observe the award or pre-stoppage rates in any ( offers of employment. It is said that the owners have made their present move on advice that the awrnrd is illegal, and this aspect is being feverishly investigated by the Attorney-General’s Department. BRITISH MINING BILL LONDON, March 14. Coal owners who hitherto had been understood to have approved the Coal Mines Bill, met at London and passed a resolution that the Bill would be unworkable. The Yorkshire and Lancashire coal owners were not represented.
