Messrs F. J. Parkinson and P. Beck will return from Wellington by to-day s express. Mr A. Tilleyshort, who has been on holiday in Greymouth, returned to-day to Wellington. Mrs J. Orr, of Christchurch, will arrive this afternoon on a visit to Greymouth. Mr J. Gatehouse, of Christchurch, who has been on a visit to Greymouth, returned by this morning’s express. Mr B. Kennedy, of Ruru, left Auckland yesterday by the Marama on a holiday trip to Sydney and Melbourne. Commercial The Rev. R. Irwin, M.A., D.D., late of Knox Church, Christchurch, will arrive to-day to conduct the Harvest Festival services at St. Johns Presbyterian Church.

Mrs O. McLean, who has been visiting Wellington, will return to Greymouth this afternoon. She will be accompanied by her mother, Mrs P. McKenzie, of Wellington.

Advice has been received by cablegram from the Executive Council ot the International Genetics Congress, inviting Dr L. Cockayne, F.R.S.S., of Ngaio, Wellington, to act as honorary-vice-president to the Congress, which will be held probably in Europe m 1932. Although primarily a botanist, Dr Cockayne’s investigations on the hybridisation of New Zealand native plants has a distinct bearing upon plant genetics. Dr Cockayne’s investigations in this connection _ are now world-famous, and this invitation comes no doubt in recognition of the eminent merit of the work he has already achieved on the most important genetical problem affecting plant life. His investigations in the hybridisation of New Zealand plants are expected to exert the most profound influence on botanical nomenclature. Press Assn.
