ANTARCTIC EXPEDITIONS

BYRD’S THANKS TO BRITISH. (By Cable —Press Assn. —Copyright.) WASHINGTON, February 13. The State Department has transmitted a message to the British Government, from Admiral Byrd, thanking the former for its offer to aid. It is, in part, as follows: —“Eternally grateful. Anxious very much to be made aware of the friendly concern of the nation of Scott, Shackleton, Mawson, and Evans, whose distinguished service always draws from us the most friendly and profound admiration for their leadership abilities. We have on all sides received evidence of the cordial interest of the British Empire in our own efforts. More particularly, New Zealand has, from the beginning, extended to our expedition the utmost hospitality and courtesy. While we aro not yet keenly apprehensive over our predicament, which is potentially quite serious, I naturally am attempting to leave undone nothing that will ensure the safety of my men.” WILKINS SAFE. LONDON, February 13. Sir Hubert Wilkins wirelessed to Deception Island on February 12, that he would arrive at the Island on February 14, and would be leaving immediately for Monte Video. All aboard the steamer John S.-Scoresby are well.
