IDOL ROBBED

RAID ON HILL TEMPLE. A remarkable raid at midnight on the jewelled idol inside the Temple on the historic mountain top fortress of Pratapgarh, built by the warrior Shivaji, is reported here to-day. After dark, parties of masked Pathans and Moslems ascended the steep hill. Electric torches divided two parties, one attacking the watchman and the other breaking down the Temple door, and taking away the precious gold ornaments, pearls, diamonds. and other stones from the idol. The valuables total three or four Inks of rupees (£22,500 or £30,000). The Temple guardians were outnumbered and heavily beaten, and the attackers got away in the darkness. ° The Mahableshwar police are now trailing the thieves over the wild and difficult country of the Western Ghats, which were selected for their inaccessibility by Shivaji as the site of the Gibraltar-like fortress.
