LATE MESSAGES

RUGBY, December 6. Sir William McLintock, a prominent chartered accountant, has been appointed to advise the Government in their enquiries on the scheme for public control and co-ordination of London’s passenger transport. His duties will be of an actuarial character. The value of London’s passenger traffic undertakings is generally estimated at over £100,000,000. He will ascertain the financial possibilities and liabilities of all companies concerned and report to the Transport Minister. It is probable that the work will take a considerable time, but the Transport Minister has indicated that the Government contemplate no further action until thorough investigation of the financial aspect of the scheme has been completed. RUGBY, December 6. A circular issued by the Minister of Health, and the President of the Board of Education urges more local authorities to use their* powers to provide for the care of children before they reach school age. The circular points out that it is uneconomic to allow health and stamina of infants to deteriorate till five years old, and then to spend a large sum of money in trying to care for them between the ages of five and fifteen, when they came under the care of school medical officers. The importance of providing maternity and child welfare treatment and nursery schools for children aged two to five is emphasised.
