A meeting of the Greymouth District Committee took place yesterday afternoon, Mr T. E. Coates presiding over an attendance of th© following members: Messrs D. J. Evans, W. H. Parfitt, W. B. Gilbert, A. Beban, and the secretary, Mr M. J. Fogarty. The Reefton Jockey Club was granted £l5 from the District Fund for the purpose of putting their first aid outfit in order. The applicants stated that it . required almost complete renewal. Trainers’ licenses were recommended to A. Wood, Kumara; C. Mercy, Hokitika; and J. T. Cameron, Omoto. Messrs Donnellan and Shannahan forwarded a reference in regard to the riding ability of R. A. Lewis, and it was decided to recommend that he be given a jockey’s license . There was a lengthy discussion relative to a claim made by E. Nelson, a jockey, for £8 which he claimed was owing to him by M. Conza, as wages. Conza attended the meeting and, after he had given an explanation, it was decided that the onus was upon Nelson to prove his claim. As an earnest of his non-liability Conza had paid the sum mentioned to the District Committee pending any action Nelson might take. .

The Conference questioned whether Conza had been actively training horses during the winter when he was unlicensed, and had pointed out that if he had done so any horses in his string would not be eligible to race at the forthcoming meetings. In reply to questions Conza stated that the only horse in his charge was Baby Bun and he had merely fed and groomed her. Baby Bun’s near foreleg had filled and consequently she was out of training. /The Committee decided to advise the Conference that Conza had not violated the rules and to recommend that he be granted a license. GREYMOUTH J.C. COMMITTEE. The Committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club met yesterday afternoon, the president, Mr T. Eldon Coates presiding over an attendance of the following: Messrs J. D. Wingham, G. Harker, H. F. Doogan, H. D. James, Kim Williams, A. Beban, C. L. Kettle and W. H. Parfitt.

At th© suggestion of the N.Z. Trotting Conference it was decided to increase the stakes for trotting races from £.lOO to £lO4, to comply with the rules of trotting. • An offer was received from a conductor of an orchestra to provide music for the races at the rate of £7 a day. After a brief discussion it was resolved to engage th© Greymouth Municipal Band. Advice was forwarded by the Secretary of the New Zealand Sports Protection League that it had been deemed advisable to wait until next session to bring the Gaming Act Amendment Bill before the House. He had been assured that strong support would be forthcoming. The petition to Parliament had been signed by 15,305 people. /rhe Greymouth Borough Council sought the co-operation of the Club in securing a suitable landing place for aeroplanes, and asked that a part of the Club’s property at Omoto b© reserved for the purpose, as it was handy and, complied with requirements. The Secretary, Mr M. J. Fogarty, explained that the area referred to was not on the course proper, but near the river bed. The Committee authorised a reply that the Club favoured the proposal, and would do all in its power to further it. Intimation was received from the Conference that revision of the rules of racing- was to be undertaken and suggestions were sought. The Chairman and Mr H. F. Doogan were ap-

pointed a sub-committee to deal with the matter. Mr R. Steel offered £B/8/- for sweets stall rights for four days’ racing at Christmas and Easter. It was resolved to fix the price for the privilege at £lO.

TRACK AND STABLE NOTES. Notification has been received by the Greymouth Jockey Club from the Racing Conference of the appointment of Messrs R. Jones as stipendiary steward and G. Black, as racecourse inspector, at the forthcoming meeting. If Ahuriri is not raced at the Canterbury Park Club’s meeting at New Year time he will probably be retired from racing and will go to the stud. Owners are reminded that on Wednesday next nominations close for the Westland Racing Club’s and th© Greymouth Trotting Club’s meetings. “There is not a better band to provide music on race days than the Greymouth Municipal. There is no doubt that they put on the right music,” said Mr C. L. Kettle at the meeting yesterday afternoon of the committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club. H. Nurse and J. W. Jennings have both reserved seven boxes at Omoto to accommodate teams they intend to bring across for the Greymouth Jockey Club’s midsummer meeting. J. B. Pearson has four boxes reserved for that meeting and also for the Easter and following Christmas fixtures. Handicaps for the Westport trots will be declared next Wednesday. The caretaker of the Omoto racecourse is to receive instructions from the Club’s committee that in future he is to display on a black-board whether or not the track is. open for training operations. If it is closed on a regular galloping day it is to be opened on the next day when conditions are suitable. Paquito is favourite for the Auckland Cup. Last Tuesday he showed slight signs of soreness after working, but the trouble wore off and he is now reported to be in great form. Chide was, shipped to Sydney yesterday from Wellington. Pangolin is an improving hurdler, and when A. E. Wormaid takes him to the Auckland meeting he should have a good chance of collecting stakes. Talaro has improved a good deal since he raced at the Cup meeting. The North Canterbury-owned pacer was a long way below his best form last month at Addington, but he is now coming along fast. Royal Comrade who raced well at Victoria Park in October is mentioned as one to be raced at the West Coast meetings during the holiday period. The fine pacer Linkman, who raced well at the August meeting last season and then trained off in his Cup preparation, is back in work again. Prince Pointer looks a good deal lighter than just prior to the Cup meeting. This brilliant pacer races well on a right-handed track, and he may show improved form at the Auckland meeting at the end of the month. Silvermine was to have been tried over a mile and a-quarter in the Egmont Cup with Hector Gray in the saddle. Th© accident yesterday to the jockey may have an effect upon the owner’s intention as Silvermine has previously been in sprint events. Zeuxis, Discordia, Garvary and Flair comprise a string which F. Christmas proposes to bring across for the West Coast Christmas Racing Carnival. The three-year-old filly Fairyland is back in work at Addington. She has plenty of speed in training, but in her race at th© New Brighton meeting, a few months ago, she performed badly. It is to be hoped that she will have some race experience before being started in the trotters’ classic event at Forbury Park.
