AUSTRALIANS DEFEATED. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 5. The Australian swimmers made their final appearance at the carnival at the tepid baths to-night. In the 880 yards scratch event, Ryan, the Australian, was defeated by G. Bridson by 18 yards. Bridson, who is the New Zealand middle-distance champion, covered the distance in llmin *2l 2-ssecs, this breaking D. P. Lindsay’s New Zealand record by 4 l-ssecs, Ryan swam bettei than he did on the previous night, but his form was nothing approaching his best time for the distance, which is llmin 2secs. The 50 yards invitation scratch race resulted in J. P. Farrell, the Auckland sprint champion, defeating Griffiths, the Australian, by a touch in 26 seconds. It was considered by many that Raper, of Auckland, who was placed third, won the race, but as he finished under the judges he was not noticed.
COAST CENTRE MEETING. A meeting of the West Coast Swimming Centre was held last evening, there being present Messrs H. Rattray (chairman), G. Walters, R. Armstrong, A. J. Boddy. P. J. Doogan, W. Bruce, F. G. McKay, C. McKechnie, C. L. Lind, and J. C. Saunders (hon. secretary) Mr M.. Houston (Hokitika) and Dr Foote (Westport) were elected vicepresidents of the Centre. Considerable correspondence relating to the Ryan-Griffiths tour was uealt with. The Greymouth Club will conduct the carnival on the occasion of the champions’ appearance at Greymouth on December 27. The question of coaching the schools was discussed, several Coast teachers having asked the Centre to do what ?t could in the matter. The Chairman
W , was asked to interview the headmasters of the schools on the subject of coaching arrangements. Arrangements for the Annette Kellerman Cup race on Sunday, January 26, were discussed. The Railway Department has been asked to run an excursion from Runanga and Greymouth on that date to Moana, where the race will be held.
