GREYMOUTH MUNICIPAL BAND.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I read with interest a letter written by “Allegro” which was published in your last evening’s issue, and as a keen supporter of the above organisation I would also like to see a statement published showing the position financially with regard to the concert and contest, and I will await with interest the balance sheet which the secretary has promised will be reported at the end of this week. I only trust that the returns will be satisfactory to all concerned, but I am doubtful of there being a big turnover after all debts incurred are finalised, as I can honestly say that I was very disappointed at the attendance at the Park that Saturday afternoon, as no doubt the contest was a treat, and great praise is due to all those who organised the same, and as long as I live I will never forget the mass parade which took place after all the panels had competed, and I am sorry for anyone who missed that spectacular display. The concert given by Christchurch talent in the evening was easily the best night’s entertainment that I have had in Greymouth, and the members of the Greymouth Band should be proud of their undertaking, even -if it does not turn out as financially as predicted. I feel sure that if we ail put our shoulder to the wheel we will get our band out of debt within a very short time, as we have in the above organisation a band of willing workers who are ready to work to raise funds so long as the public supports them, but in every town you will find a few pessimists who are always ready to “run down” a worthy, object. The town should be highly proud of these members as they have' proved their worth at every! contest they have attended, and it is a stej on the downward grade when a band such as our own cannot attend a contest simply because of their financial position. I should not like to see the band disband, but if the Greymouth people do not support them wholeheartedly then it would be a wise step on tiie part of the responsible officers to do so, and then we would realise what an asset the band is to the town. —I am, etc., HARMONIC.
