TRACK AND STABLE NOTES Some time ago it was reported that Mr. L. G. Hill, secretary of the Dunedin Jockey Club was hopeful of a meeting eventually between Limeriqk, Nightmarch and Chide in connection with the James Hazlett Gold Cup race in February. His luck is out, however, as Limerick is to be spelled for a year, Chide has been sold and leaves New Zealand to-morrow, and Nightmarch is spoken of as being likely to go to Australia again in the Autumn. Four wins at the Eprbury Park meeting have established C. S. Donald in a strong position at the head of the . winning trainers’ list. He has now 16 wins to his credit, while R. B. Berry and F. ,G. Holmes are joint runners-up with 8 wins each. Wah made a slow beginning in both of his races at Forbury Park and then

failed to produce the speed of which he is capable, but which he. fails to reproduce when racing. The following first favourites have won the Auckland Cup:—Templeton (1874), Ariel (1876 and 1878), Foul Play (1880), Welcome Jack (1882), Salvage (1883), Nelson (1886 and 1888),j Crackshot (1890), St. Hippo (1892), Siege Gun (1902), Mahutonga (1904). In the race of 1909 the bracketed pair, Downfall and Chauleuse, carried most money on the totalisator, but All Red, »• who won, could be cited as the individual favourite. Chide being sold for 6000 guineas breaks a previous Dominion record of 5600 guineas paid in 1891 by Mr. Sam Horden of Sydney for the stallion Nordenfeldt, by Musket from Onyx.. The highest-priced racehorse previously sold in the Dominion was the three-year-old filly Golden Slipper, this daughter of Multiform and Aura realising 4500 gs at the clearing sale of the late Mr. G. G. Stead’s horses in August, 1908, her buyer being Mr. W. E. White, of New South Wales. At the same sale the stallion Multiform, by Hotchkiss from Formo, was secured by Mr. John M’Donald, a New South Wales studmaster, for 3750g5. Wrackler will be better suited when stepped out over a two-mile course than when handicapped at 2.12 at Forbury Park. Corinax won the Auckland Cup last year with 7.4 up and this year the Magpie gelding is to carry 51b more. Although an outsider he won the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Takapuna, so may be said to be in winning form again. He will, however, find the Cup a different proposition. Some of the wiseacres went for Neerson in the Recovery Handicap despite the fact that he was not in the picture in his race on the first day of the meeting. Apparently he is a better horse when chasing the money on a muddy track than on good going. Hoylake who figures on the list fOr the Auckland -Cup, has a mind of his own, and if he keeps his mind on racing may show a quick return of the excellent form he displayed last spring. Hunting Cry and Taurua have been handicapped for both the Auckland Cup of two miles and the Railway Handicap of six furlongs. A few yards start in sloppy going counts for more than a similar handicap on dry ground. This was shown by the fact that Lady Cello and Neerson had the Recovery Handicap to themselves. There is now every prospect of Chide and Nightmarch meeting in weight-for-age races at Randwick in the Autumn. Sir Roy, who won eight races in two seasons for Mr. A. McAuley before being sold to a Victorian owner, was produced a fortnight ago at Caulfield. One critic considers that his showing was such that he was worth keeping in mind. Two seasons ago Sir Roy paid a big dividend when he won the Otago Plate at Riccarton.

Lorrain, an eight-year-old, owned by a Belgian sportsman, M. Jaques Wit- ' touck, is being sent from France to Australia to race and subsequently ' to be sent to the stud. French horses have been tried in Australia with varying degrees of success. Kenilworth proved to be one of the best, both as a stayer and as a sire of stayers. Among his progeny are Wolaroi and Kennaquhair, and the jumpers Kentle and Moss Trooper. Other horses are Shepherd King, Cyklon (sire of Trivalve), Tidal and Rionscup, also Apremont, who figured, as a successful sire in New Zealand nearly forty years ago. The handicaps for the Auckland Cup were interesting, especially in regard to Mr McManemin’s assessments for Chide and Nightmarch. Neither will

be racing, but, as was generally expected, the Melbourne Gup winner was made top-weight with 9.10 and conceded 61b. to his most notable rival. Chide was to carry 41b. over his weight-for-age, and it had been stated previously that he. would not go to Auckland if he got more than 9.0. With other good horses like Historic, Paquito, Concentrate, In The Shade and Star Stranger in the race, Nightmarch with 9.10 was by no means under-rated by the handicapper. He was asked to carry 21b more than Wairiki, who won as a four-year-old with 9.8 in the 6.7 minimum, and than Rapine when he won two years ago. Evidently his connections thought Nightmarch had been set too hard a task. The weights declared by Mr. Me- 1 Manemin for the Auckland Cup are as follow:—Nightmarch 9.10, Chide 9.4, Star Stranger and Historic 8.12, Pegaway 8.4, Paquito 8.1, In the Shade 7.13, Concentrate 7.10, Prince Humphrey, Corinax 7.9, Vertigern, Oratrix, Count Cavour 7.7, Kick Off and Hoylake 7.4, Prodice 7.3, Panther, Seatown Cashier and First Acre 7.1, Spearmiss, Amor, Atholspear, Desert' Glow, Flying Juliet, Flying Prince, Goshawk, Hyde Park, Hunting Cry, Jaloux, King’s Jest, Merry Mint, Pride, Pink Note, Shrewd, Transformer, The Lover, Talisker, The Viscount, Taurua, The Hawk (all 7.0). So far Nightmarch has been scratched, and Chide will be absent. Nineteen entries for the Auckland Trotting Cup to be decided at Alexander Park on December 27, indicate that the field will be worthy of the rich stake and gold cup with which

the event is endowed. In the Courtenay Handicap at Addington recently Dilworth won in the good time of 4m 265, after standing on the mark and losing considerable ground before settling down. It is computed that, she went the two miles .from post to post in round about 4m 20s and it is reported that it was only necessary to witness the performance to realise that she is a pacer of real class. Dilworth is on the limit, as at present she cannot be handicapped on a tightei' mark than 4m 28s so that she appeals at the present time as a good proposition. Leitrim won the Takapuna Plate and the Cautley Handicap, beating Crimestor and Volimond on both occasions. In the seven furlongs Leitrim and Volimond carried 8.9, and Crimestor 8.3, while over six furlongs Leitrim carried 71b more than Volimond and 51b more than Crimestor. The three figure on even terms in the handicap at Ellerslie. When Prodice won the Alison Cup, which is over a distance 400yds short of two miles, she did so easily and amongst the Auckland Cup candidates she defeated were In the Shade, Corinax, Transformer, The Lover, and Flying Juliet. She carried over a stone' more than the three last-mentioned, a pound more than Corinax, and 51b less than In the Shade. Ovei’ the two miles journey for the Auckland Cup, In the Shade has to carry 101 b and Corinax 61b more than the filly, who is only weighted 31b more than Transformer, Flying Juliet and The Lover. Provided she can stay, Prodice should be able in the Auckland Cup to dispose again of those she beat in the Alison Cup. The “second leg” of the Auckland double, the Railway Handicap, of six furlongs, drew 47 nominations, and the weights have been declared, as follow : Paganelli 9.12, Cimabue 9.2, Gascony 8.13, Silver Paper 8.11, Silvermine 8.10, Toxeuma 8.8, White Fang 8.6, Nancy Lee 8.4, Havering 8.1, Eaglet Lady Quex, Lady’s Boy 8.0, Ceremony 7.8, Arrow Lad, Vai] ar, High Finance, Great Star 7.7, Goblin Market, , Limited 7.6, Hunting Cry 7.5, • First Money, Awarere, Auda, Air King, Aspiring, Crimestor, Coon Song, Flair, False Scent, Freehold, Gold Dawn, Hunting Boy, Leitrim, Leader, Lucy Rose, Llanore, Melissa, Polyxena, Paiko, Refresher, Royal Dulce, Taurua, Taku Tama, Tasty, Valuation, Volimond, Value all 7.0. So far Limited has been scratched. Handicaps for the Auckland Troting Cup are as follow : —Bonny Logan, Concliff, Dilworth, Free Advice, Glide Away, Linkman, Machine Gun, Silk Thread, The Abbey, Torpedo Huon scr; King Pointer 12; Imprint, Peterwah 24; Gold Jacket, Jack Potts, Kohara 48; Prince Pointer 60; Padlock 72; Peter Bingen 84.
