COBDEN TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING.. The Cobden Town Board met last evening, the Chairman, Mr C. K. Miller presiding over an attendance of the following:—Crs T. Tennent, H. A. Wimsett, C. Uddstrom, J. Walker, M. Minehan, D. T. Cochrane, and Miss Davison, Town jClerk. Mr C. T. Gunn wrote in reference to the sanitary fee, £2, charged against his mother’s property in Bright Street. In July 1928, Mrs Gunn had applied for exemption and as no reply had been received it was assumed that it had been granted. The Town Clerk read the Board’s resolution regarding the matter and it was decided to inform Mr Gunn that the amount was due.

Messrs Guinness and Kitchingham applied for approval of transfer of a halfracre section from J. O’Donnell to G. W. Quigley. The transfer was approved, as also was one of a property from R. Flintoff to J. Duncan.

Goldfields revenue of 15/- was received.

The Defence Department replied to the Board’s enquiry regarding tenure of the rifle range and its liability for rates. The Department had given Cr Minehan a license to graze the range, conditional upon certain work being done by him. It was not a case of a lease and a precedent was quoted showing that, under the circumstances rates were not payable. The Government Health Department wrote suggesting that the Board should .adopt model by-laws as drawn up by Dr T. F. Telford. On the motion of Cr Cochrane, the letter was received.

The secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board invited the Board to send a representative to a public meeting to be held in Christchurch relative to the campaign against cancer. It was decided to hold the matter over for further consideration at next meeting. Mr J. Hitchcock was granted a permit to renew a front verandah of his residence at Nelson Street. A similar application from J. Howat was also granted. Mrs C. McGurk was given a permit to build a four-roomed cottage. Mr W. Williams drew attention to the bad state of the road leading to his property in Fox Street. Cr Minehan said it was but a track and he questioned whether the Board should be called upon to gravel it. On the motion of Cr Walker, the Chairman of Works was authorised to inspect the track and he was given power to act in the matter. Accounts totalling £153/8/6 were passed for payment, including £152 15/6, as the levy to the Greymouth Hospital. On the motion of the Chairman, Mr Inglis was granted permission to erect a bowser provided that it was at the back of his section and out of sight from the street. , Cr Wimsett suggested that the blackberry at the corner of Ward and Sturge Streets should be cleared away to avoid possibility of an accident. • Cr Minehan submitted that it would create a bad precedent if the- Board cleared a frontage, and it was decided to' write to the School Committee £o attend to the matter. Cr Tennent referred to the dilapidated state of the fence along the foot-

path from Cobden Bridge towards the township and- asked-whether the Town Board or the Harbour Board was responsible for its maintenance. It whs decided to ask Mr J. Higgins, County Engineer, which local body was responsible and Cr Minehan was authorised to have repairs carried out if the Town Board had to bear the cost. The Town Clerk reported that she had been asked by a representative of the Nelson Education Board whether the Board would sell its library. The Chairman said that the books had been forwarded from Maori Gully and as the library was a gift, he thought it would not be the right thing to dispose of it. Other members concurred and the Clerk was authorised to reply accord ingly. Cr Minehan suggested that the bigdrain between Sturge and Newcastle Street corners should be filled in with rock as it was useless and might be , a source of danger. „ The Board authorised the work to be done as opportunity offers.
