THE PERFECT AIRMAN

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS. The physiological make-up of the perfect airman (according to the “Lancet”) demands that he ‘ must have a visual acuity of 6/6, he must be able to exercise single vision binocularity, at very near range, and to maintain binocular vision under increasing disability. His visual field must be wide and his colour sense accurate. His Eustachian tubes must be free and efficient to regulate and equalise the continual changes of atmospheric pressure. His respiratory efficiency must be high, and his chest expansion good, and his cardiovascular system equal to the maintenance of an inadequate circulation under adverse conditions of strain and low oxygen pressure. In other words, he must possess the physical and physiological attributes of any good pilot as well as a neuro-mus-cular co-ordination above the normal, but in addition he must have special ability of a high order.
