VICTORIAN ELECTIONS

A STALE-MATE RESULT.

(By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, December 1. The Victorian State elections were held yesterday, when 109 candidates stood for the forty-five seats that were contested. Twenty members (includ ing 14 Labourite) had been returned unopposed. . The returns are still incomplete. The present state of parties appears to be as follows Labour Nationalists Country Parties ••• At the dissolution of Parliament the state of the parties, was : Labour 28, Nationalist 20, Country Parties 14, Independent 3. ' The party leaders are apparently well ahead, but Mr Groves (Minister of Railways) and Mr Cuthbertson (Honorary Minister) are both in a precarious position. The nett result of the election seems to be a stalemate, as neither the Labour nor the Nationalist-Country fusion will be able to' hold office with dependence on the unstable Indepen dents. z _
