MEETINGS

KUMARA. BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Correspondent). A meeting of the Kumara Borough Council was held on Thursday. Present: The Mayor (in the chair), Crs Murphy, Reedy, McDonald, McEnaney, Hamer, McFarlane, Burrell, Stewart. The Conservator of Forests wrote regarding account owing to the Blackwater Sawmilling Coy., stating that the Borough would be held responsible for payment of the amount, stating that in terms of Section 60 of the Forests Act 1921-22, the timber remains the property of the Crown until such time as the royalty is paid.—Resolved that the question of payment of the account be left over until the Town Clerk, had made further inquiries.

The Commissioner 1 of Transport wrote regarding speed limits of motor traffic passing through the Borough. Resolved that owing to the Borough having no by-law in respect to speed limits, the police be written to asking that action be taken against anyone travelling through the town at an excessive rate of speed.

The Minister of Public Works wrote regretting he was unable to favour* the request made by the Council for a further grant of £2OO to assist in the cost of repairs to the Taraniakau Bridge, find m,ore particularly in view of the'fact that it was not the policy of the Government to assist with the cost of works within Boroughs. The Mayor said the bridge was not in the Borough, The Borough boundary did not extend to the bridge which was • between the Grey and Westland Counties. He moved that the Town Clerk reply to the Minister pointing out the financial position of the Borough in respect to this bridge and at the same time, enlighten him as to its location. Cr Murphy seconded.—Carried.

Mr Sampson wrote stating that the cost of repairs to the headstone of the late Gilbert Stewart would be £3 10s. The Mayor said the Town Clerk had prepared a list and he did not anticipate any difficulty in raising the amount. —Resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Mayor and Town Cleyk. , Mr Shirley, Postmaster, wrote acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Town Clerk, repudiating any liability to the Council for the alteration of the telephone leads. The Secretary of the Treasury wrote regarding interest due on the Taramakau Bridge Loan. The Chairman of Public Works said the roads were now in fair order. He had instructed the day labour man to attend to the necessary work on the Zig Zag. The Mayor said he considered quite a lot of unnecessary expenditure was incurred on work that could well be left over in the meantime. Money had to be found for the bridge, and no work, with the exception of that of an urgent nature should be undertaken. Cr Reedy said the Zig Zag required attention as it was in 1 worse order to-day than ever before.

Cr Hamer moved that the Public Works Committee meet and go into the matter of works urgently required in the Borough.—Cr Murphy seconded. —Carried. The Chairman of the Domain Board said the Recreation Ground had been visited and as a result it was'suggested that the. whole Council visit the ground. Resolved that' the Council meet and see what was best .to be done.

The question of cleaning up the town was discussed, and'the hope expressefl that the work would lie carried out before Christmas. The inext meeting of the Council takes place on December 19. Accounts' to the amount of £35 15s 2d’ were passed for payment,
