At the Supreme Court, Joseph Campbell Scott, 40, an Imperial Army veteran of the Mons Retreat, who was a prisoner of war in Germany and Russia for four years, was admitted to probation for two years on a charge of breaking and entering at Oamaru. Counsel stated that Scott came to New Zealand in 1923 with an unblemished war and civil record. He had suffered many privations in prison ' camps, and a wound still troubled him. His offence was stupid, he, while in liquor, breaking into a friend’s house, < stealing a torch and eight ancient coins.
