HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent).

HOKITIKA, November 28. The weather during the past three days has been stormy. On Monday aud Tuesday nights, particularly heavy thunderstorms prevailed, with torrential downpours of rain. The water sought the weaknesses caused by the big earthquake and many hitherto watei tight residences were damaged by leaks thus caused,. Quinnat are fairly plentiful in Lake Kanieri this' season and some good catches have been made. The fish are of a- uniform size, about two pounds weight. These are considered to be the fish liberated two years ago. The funeral of the late Mrs. R. Meharry, of Upper Kokatahi took place on Tuesday morning when the settlers of that locality attended to pay their last respects to deceased. The Rev. H. Nelson Wright conducted the funeral rites at All Saints, Hokitika and the graveside.

Mr. J. Downs, who has been custodian of the Government buildings here for the past five years and who is being transferred to Invercargill, was the guest at a gathering in the office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands yesterday. The Commissioner (Mr. W. T. Morpeth), presided and eulogised Mr. Down’s services at the building and in wishing him health and success in the future presented him with a Kaiapoi travelling rug and an umbrella as tokens of esteem from the Civil Servants employed in the building. In returning thanks Mr. Downs said he had always received kindness and consideration from those ■among whom he laboured and he would always have pleasant recollections of the years spent in Hokitika.

The week’s rain has caused the outlying streets and roads to be in a had state. Innumerable pot holes are the bane of motorists just now. The Borough authorities have a dray at work filling in the holes, but much has to be done.
