“DAUGHTER’S HONOUR”

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Under the above heading, in the Grey Evening Star dated Nov. 2, the following appeared, “A father has now the right to kill his daughter and her betrayer in cases where the daughter sacrifices her honour. This is provided for in the new penal code which also allows a husband or wife to kill his or her partner for a marital offence.” As there has been a lot of talk on the above subject lately, and as one only knows what one reads in your paper, on Mexican affairs, I hope you will not think me unreasonable in

seeking any information that is to be had through the medium of the Star. Myself and many others not versed in their laws, ancient or modern, would like to know if this Act is original, and if so, is it meant to make the nation pure as an offset to that enterprising lawyer of theirs one read about some time back, who is out to make divorce easier in Mexico than it is in Reno, U.S.A. On the other hand is it a smack at so-called Christian countries where amendments to the Divorce Act are coming into existence every year. There’s nothing new under the sun. If so, some of your readers may be able to give the information, as to what country or countries this law was in vogue, when and where, also were these people any purer for having a law like this put. into execution. A little light on the above would be gratefully received by yours, etc., — SEEKER. Reefton Nov. 8.
