HOW TO ADVERTISE

FIRM FINDS NEWSPAPERS BEST The supreme value of newspaper advertising was urged by Mr. W. Buchan-an-Taylor, Publicity Manager of Messrs J. Lyons and Co., Ltd., in an address to the Wandsworth (London) Rotary Club recently. Mr. Buchanan-Taylor told the romantic story of Messrs Lyon’s rise from a catering contract at the Newcastle Exhibition of 1887, to a company with a capital of nearly £8,500,000. He said: “The foundation of the first firm was a twopenny pot of tea. Now the firm sells more than 1.250,000 packets of tea daily. “Lyons came into a field that was said to be fully equipped, but by persistence, patience, and perseverance, built up the greatest catering organisation in the world, employing at present more than 30,000 people. “The industrialist, small and large, must make his products kndwn.. He must advertise. And if you ask me how best to advertise, I would say: Use the newspapers that go forth in their millions of copies per day to the very, doorstep of the consumers. “Don’t be discouraged if results commensurate with your advertising expenditure do not immediately accrue; Persevere, and as youp business inincreases extend your advertising.”
