COMMITTEE MEETING. ‘ S' * ' ! «!., ~ ‘- V ’ The monthly meeting of the Grey mouth Main School Committee was held last evening, when there were present Mes‘srs W. G. Scott (chairman), W. R. J. Smythe, R. J. Williams, G. Herring, A. V. Olliver, A. J. Eairmaid, and H. Herring (secretary). It was decided to grant £2 to the Headmaster for the purchase of cricket material. An account for work done was re-| ceived from a lady, who asked that 5s be kept off when the amount waspaid, as a subscription to the Dental Clinic. The Dental Clinic Nurse (Miss K. \ M. Thompson) reported 161 attendi ances at the Clinic, and 335 operations. Patients re-examined—3s. The Canterbury Education • Board notified that a subsidy amounting to £9 5s would be paid on an amount raised at the school—£4 12s 6d —for library books. the amount covered the usual £1 for £1 subsidy on voluntary contributions and an additional grant by the Board. The Secretary of the Board also

wrote stating that the Committee’s finances had been reviewed, and it had been found that they were entitled to the £2O 10s 2d claimed as subsidy. The Secretary of the Committee advised that the amount was to hand.

Lengthy circulars were received from the Canterbury School Committees’ Association concerning matters of importance to committees. The Committee was urged to state any urgent requirements in respect to extension and improvements of buildings. The letter stated that committees were unani-

mous in retaining the present term holidays, and that the Association had been notified that »the Board had decided “to refund in full to school committees payments made in respect ■ of water charges.” It was also stated that it had been decided to alter the name “Junior High School” to “Senior Primary School.”

A second circular concerned the Minister of Education’s Select Committee which was set up to deal with the proposed re-organisation of the education system, and the “Junior High School” scheme. It was decided to affiliate wi,th the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, members remarking on the benefit obviously gained by membership.

The appointment of a teacher to fill the place vacated by the resignation. of Miss Morgan, assistant infant mistress, was discussed. The Board submitted two applications, that of Miss Gladys T. Charles, of Coalgate, being' approved. The Headmaster (Mr S. Lorking) reported as follows for the month of October: —At the end of October there were 299 boys and 283 girls on the Main School roll, and the average attendance for the month was: Boys 275.3, girls 256.3. At the BJaketown School there were 60 boys and 55 girls on the roll and the average attendance was: Boys 52.1, girls 49. Miss Morgan, who resigned in August last, has not yet been replaced. Could the Com mittee see its way to provide £2 for, the cricket. The bats, which were purchased a year ago, have become useless. The report was adopted.
