MIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA

STATE GOVTS.’ VIEW (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) PERTH, November 7. During a discussion in the Westralian Parliament upon the Prime Minister’s suggestion to suspend the migration agreement with Britain, Mr. Mitchell (Leader of the Opposition) declared that Mr. Scullin had no right to decide whether the States, should bring migrants, from Britain. Mr. Scullins action would have a serious effect on State iinances. ADELAIDE, November 7. Mr. Butler, Premier of South Australia, has telegraphed to Mr. J. H. Scullin, asking him to defer the proposal to suspend immigration. Mr. Butler points out that the Commonwealth has no right to suspend the migration agreement without the authority of the States. SYDNEY, November 7. As a party to the thirty-four million sterling migration agreement, the State Government intends to ask the Prime Minister not to make any move to suspend the scheme, until it lias been consulted. SHIPOWNERS’ PROTEST. LONDON, November 7. A shipowner, who accompanied the recent delegation to Australia, in an interview expressed the shipowners’ disappointment at the drastic restriction on migration foreshadowed by Mr Scullin, which must result in serious losses to regular passenger lines. He said that the shipowners while realising the seriousness of the crisis, with which Australia is forced, look with confidence to the Government to recognise that the present industrial conditions can be only a temporary setback to Australia’s advance, therefore the Government should preserve a calm mind and not indiscriminately scrap all migration machinery, which with the return of Australia’s prosperity, will undoubtedly be needed.
