ELECTION LIBEL WRITS
PAPER-OWNERS’ PROTEST.

(Recd. Oct. 26, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 26. Delegates of the New South Wales Country Press waited on Premier Bavin and requested an amendment to the law relating to defamation, claiming that a practice had grown up during the elections for the issue oi “frivolous” writs against newspapers, ostensibly with the object of stifling criticism of candidates, the writs being withdrawn as soon as the elections are over. Mr Bavin replied that the matter was of immense public importance. He promised to obtain the best legal ad vice, whether an amendment such as desired could be made, without ie stricting the rights of persons desiring to use Court processes legitimately.
