AMUSEMENTS

OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT.

“Shadows of the Night,” a picture with an intei-esting background of newspaper reporting and underworld life is showing to-night. For the first time the screen reveals what actually happens before that front page stoiy catches your eye at the breakfast table. The film shows how Jimmy Sherwood, working on a metropolitan daily, goes out with his dog Flash to uncovei* the story of a city wide police “clean-up,” and what happens to him. It is new, exciting stuff full of gun dangers and romance. SUNDAY. Esther Ralston, beautiful blonde actress, appears in her new picture, “The Sawdust Paradise” as a street carnival ballyhoo girl. As a dyed-in-the-wool ballyhoo girl, with a cheap travelling street carnival, Miss Ralston plays a part that ranges between the light and broad comedy which has featured her previous starring roles, and real drama. CANTATA AT ST. JOHN’S. Lovers of first-class choral music should hear the cantata “The Great Light,” composed by Finley Lyon. The work commences with a beautiful chorus, “Praise ye the Mighty God” and concludes with the chorus “All Hail the Power.” The sentiment and the music are very beautiful and should prove a treat of the highest order, as there is included a splendid chorus, quartettes for male, female and mixed voices, duets and solos. A choir of 30 voices has been in careful preparation for the past three months, and as it has been trained by Mi’ A. McMaster and will be conducted by him, the work .will be above the average. The soloists are Mesdames Temple and Rosewell, Misses Warnes, Kitchingham and Adkin, L.T.C.L., Messrs Bringezu, Halls, Tennent, Boote and Anderson. To get the full effect of the work with good organ accompaniment the cantata will be rendered in St. John’s. Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, October 1, at 8 p.m., when Miss B. Drake, A.T.C.L., will preside at the organ.
