TAWA FLAT TUNNEL

WATER ADDS TO TASK.

(Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, August 30.

In connection with the driving of the big Tawa Flat tunnel, a shaft was sunk and headings commenced. This is in addition to the headings at the two exits. The northern drive of these two extra headings has so far proved fairly good ground, but going couth, the hill has been so shaken up by earthquakes of times past that timbering ahs been necessary to right up the face.

To add to the difficulties, the subterranean lake, or reservoir, was on Tuesday night delivering a flow of 20,000 gallons an hour. Three Cameron pumps have proved unable to keep the water down. On Wednesday afternoon the water had completely filled the heading. The pumps are working away chains under water, but it is only a question of time wh.en the foot of the shaft will be flooded. The grade is one in 124, and the whole position made very difficult.

Underground streams of large dimensions are rare in this kind of work, but reservoirs much less so. It is considered that this is a reservoir. If the. present pumps fail to get the water down, extra pumps will be put on.
