WONDERS OF BRAZIL
STRANGE TREES AND PLANTS.
CHICAGO, August 13.
Trees which produce sugar and lard, plants which yield potions for treating disease, and poison which kills all fish in a body of water without spoiling their edibility, are among The discoveries reported by Mr. L. Williams, leader of the Botanical Expedition to the River Amazon in Brazil. “The sugar tree,” he said, “has a bark containing a sweet, edible resin with the consistency of real sugar. The lard tree excretes an oily substance which is in close affinity to the lard rendered from animal fats. Many plants produce remedies for treating rheumatism, nervous disorders and tumours.”
