DOMINION TOURNAMENT

GISBORNE, August 28.

The New. Zealand ladies’ hockey tournament commences here to-mor-row and the present prospects are for fine weather. There are twelve visiting teams, viz., Auckland (two), Bush Union, Canterbury, Eastern (Southland), Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua, Ruahine (Dannevirke), South Canterbuiy, Southland, Wairarapa and Wellington will participate, with two teams from Poverty Bay, a total of fourteen teams. All the visiting teams are now in Gisborne. The visitors were recorded a reception this evening, when a welcome was extended by the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, and other speakers. There was a very large attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all, including the chaperons, players and friends of the visiting teams. It is estimated that 230 hockey visitors are in Gisborne, of whom about 170 have been billeted by residents of the town. The tournament will 'open to-morrow afternoon, three grounds being used. The draw for the opening day is as follows: — A section: Poverty Bay A v. South Canterbury, No. 1 ground; Rotorua v. Bush No. 2; Ruahine-Dannevirke v. Auckland A. No. 2; Southland a bye. B section: Hawke’s Bay v. Canterbury, No. 1 ground; Wairarapa v. Auckland B, No. 3; Wellington v. Poverty Bay B, No. 3; Eastern Southland A a bye. . A very full programme of entertainments has been arranged for the visitors, of which the most interesting function will be on Sunday, when the visitors will be motored to Te Karaka, nineteen miles from Gisborne, where they will be the guests of the residents of that district, and will be accorded a typical welcome by the Maoris. SIX-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. A six-a-side ladies’ hockey tournament was held yesterday afternoon at. Hokitika. A big crowd attended and saw some fine hockey among the ten teams participating. The tourney was ivon by Mawhera A, who defeated Hokitika A in the final game by two goals to nil. The. progress of the games was as follow: —

First Round. —Mawhera A beat United A by three goals to nil, two scored by Miss McGrath, and one by Miss Leach.

Hokitika A beat Blackball by two goals to nil, the scorers being Mrs Butson and Miss Olsen.

Star A beat Koljatahi by a hit behind, after extra time had been played. United B beat Mawhera B by a hit behind, after extra time was ordered.

Hokitika B beat United C by one goal to nil. Second Round. —Mawhera A beat Hokitika C by two goals to nil, both scored by Miss McGrath. Hokitika A. beat Hokitika B by three goals to nil, the scorers being Mrs Butson (2), and Miss J. Hall. Mawhera A beat Star A by two goals to nil, the scorers being Misses N. Furness and McGrath. Semi-final: —Hokitika A beat United B by two goals to nil, Miss Hall being, the scorer. Final: —Mawhera A beat Hokitika A by two goals to nil. Miss McGrath was the goal-getter.
