HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL (Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, August 24. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening: Present, The Mayoi (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. T. W. Bruce A. R. Elcock, E. W. Keenan, A.. C. Armstrong,, J. L. Turner, Jas. King, E. Teichelmann, D. J. Evans. The Postmaster, Hokitika, wrote intimating that a telegraph pole which is in the road of the pipe 1 line at Lake Kanieri will be removed at Council s expense. Miss M. Halliday, lion, secretary, Hospital ball committee, wrote asking for use of Town Hall on Sept. 4 and 5. —Granted. Mr. J. N. W. McGeorge forwarded application for permission to install a septic tank and drainage shaft on Section 910, Hampden Street. —Granted, subject to removal if necessary and to charge of fee of Council think necessary. Mr. A. Cowie, Stafford Street, wrote asking for permission to install a septic tank on Sections 808 and 809, Stafford Street.—Granted on similar conditions. Mr. L. Gooch, applied to lease Part Reserve 801, Sale Street, Valuation Roll No. 7, on a year to year tenancy at an annual rental of five per cent, of the unimproved value, to cover the whole of Part Reserve 801. —To be approved. The Auditor General forwarded the balance sheet of the Borough of Hokitika for the year ended March 31, 1929, duly certified to be correct. —Resolved that a special meeting be held on the matter.

Mr. Joseph Natherley, Greymouth, reported on the necessary repairs to the Public Library (after Mr. Stevenson finished the job putting ties through the building), and stating that the total cost wouuld be £122, and alternatively the work could be done much cheaper if the’ cracks are not grouted, but intimating that this latter course would never be satisfactory; and (2) shoulud the Council decide to dispense with any of the work, Mr. Natherly is prepared to do the remainder at 3/9 per hour and expenses.—The matter left with the Town Clerk to make final arrangements if desirable. W. Barrowman, Sale Street, wrote complaining of the state of Sale Street near his residence. —Referred to P.W. Committee. Tenders for supply of fine beach gravel were received from P. Coyle, 1/8 per load; B. E. Coyle 1/3 per load; 2/8 screened pit gravel; J. Cameron 2/6 beach gravel.—lt was resolved that the lowest tender (Mr. B. E. Coyle) be accepted. It was resolved that general carting in the Borough be divided as equally as possible. Accounts amounting to the sum of £756 were passed for payment. The Mayor moved a resolution authorising an overdraft at the bank not exceeding £2,000. The Mayor also moved the necessary resolution re striking of the rates which was carried. Cr. Elcock suggested that the Council meet monthly instead of fortnightly as at present, stating that the small amount of business transacted did not warrant fortnightly meetings. He instanced the Grey Borough Council as meeting monthly. Councillors, however thought that while the finances were tight fortnightly meeting would be preferable.
