HOKITIKA, August 9

The funeral of the little girl, Mollie Campbell, took place on Wednesday afternoon, and was attended by many friends. At All Saints’ Church two hymuns were sung, and the Rev. Nelson Wright delivered a short address. There were several floral tokens of sympathy, including a wreath from her Sunday School class. The influenza epidemic appears to be on the wane, as indicated by increased attendances at the schools. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs A. C. Armstrong, E. W. Heenan, T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, G. Heinz, J. L. Turner. Apologies were received for the absence of Crs D. J. Evans and Jas. King.

Accounts amounting to £ll7 2/4 were passed for payment. The foreman (Mr F. Chesterman) reported on work carried out during tho month.

The Abattoirs Manager reported animals slaughtered during the month: 20 cows, 21 heifers, 7G bullocks, 139 sheep, 11 lambs, 32 -pigs, 18 calves; condemned —1 cow, 1 bullock. Total fees received £65 4/, for same month last year £64 4/.

The Treasurer presented estimates for the ensuing year. The Mayor referred to the fact that the Borough was carrying out large undertakings in connection with the water supply and drainage, and counselled economy, so that there will be no necessity to increase the rates. The estimated expenditure is set down at £5031.

IV. H. Gifford applied (1) for water service connection to section 1163, Brittan and Hampden streets; (2) drain connection from same section. — Granted.

The District Public Trustee wrote, asking the Council to grant lease of Reserve No. 498, Hall Street, direct to Florence Andrews, widow of the late John Andrews. —Lease granted. The Sanitary Inspector, Grey mouth, wrote asking that the Sale Street drain between Stafford and Weld streets, receive attention. —On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved that the foreman look into the matter, and determine if the sections on the east side can. bo drained into the drain on the western side, and the work to be considered urgent.

An application was received from the Pacific Lodge for water connection, which was granted. An application for an extra water connection was received from W. Keller.

The Borough Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £134/16/-, payments £716/8/4, debit £727/14/10.
