REEFTON NOTES

REEFTON, August 3.
Mr N. R. Clarke, who has been transferred from the Picton Post Office staff to Reefton, has arrived, and took up his duties yesterday. Mr Clarke is an old Reefton boy.
A meeting took place at the County Council Chambers last evening to meet Mr J. Johnson, Tutor in charge of the W.E.A. Section of Canterbury College, with the object of forming a reading circle at Reefton. Mr A. E. Werry presided, and it was decided to form a circle at Reefton, on the lines indicated by Mr Johnson, who explained the object of the classes. Some fourteen attended under Mr Johnson’s direction. Sir J. M. Barrie’s play, “A Twelve Pound Look” was read. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Johnson for his Visit and able explanation of the idea of the formation of the classes and extension of their advantages to the smaller centres.
Mrs Jno. Rodden, of Waiuta, was brought to Reef ton on Thursday evening and entered Reefton Hospital where she is seriously ill. The late Frederick Clerkin, whose death was reported yesterday, was born at Hokitika, and was for many years confined to bed in the Reefton Hospital crippled with severe rheumatism. Some days ago he contracted influenza, and the' attack terminated fatally at 5 a.m. yesterday morning. Before his departure from Cronadun, Mr R. Don was the recipient of an address and a presentation from the children and their parents. Miss Cooper presented the address and Olive Smith made the presentation of a wallet of notes,*the latter asking him that he purchase something to remind him of his residence in Cronadun. Messrs M. O’Malley and P. Smith were also present and both spoke regretting Mr Don’s removal and wishing him success in his new position at Wakefield.
