MEETINGS

W.E.A. BOX SCHEME.

A number of residents attended at Mr M. J. ’Fogarty’s room last evening, to meet Mr J. Johnsqn, M.A., tutorial class lecturer, of Canterbury Colelge, who introduced Professor Shelley’s “Box Scheme;” This is an arrangement by which study circles, of 12 to 20 people are being formed all over the district to handle material sent out on ja circuit from the College in Christchurch. So far, courses in .(a) music, art and literature of various periods, i (b) drama and opera, (c) experimental psychology, have been made up. In addition to the typed and duplicated lecture which is supplied to each, circle, member, records and plates are sent to illustrate lectures in music and art respectively and sets of plays (10 in each) for drama. As the material is supplied free to bona fide W.E.A. circles a fee of 2/6 or so for* the session to cover local expenses is all that is required. After a number of questions and discussion, on the motion of Mr H. Haigh and Miss M. Anderson, it was decided to form a circle, to take the drama and opera course, with the hope that other circles might subsequently be formed When the idea became known. Mr E. L. Kehoe and Mr H. Haigh were elected leader* and secretary respectively, pro. tern. The remainder of the evening was spent in the reading and discussion of Sir James Barrie’s one-act play, “The Twelve-Pound Look,” in which parts were taken by Miss Anderson, Brother Tarcisius and Messrs Atchley and Johnson. It is also hoped to form circles under the box scheme in the country districts.
