EMPIRE ECONOMICS

CANADIAN ATTITUDE (Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) (By Cable —Press Assn. —Copyright.) VICTORIA (British Columbia), Aug. 1. The Conservative leader, Mr Bennett, addressing a meeting at Bowkers Beach, on Wednesday, said it was not true that the Conservatives dud not stand for development of Empire trade. “We do not care though, whether it is British, France, United States, or Italy, we are not going to give away markets without giving something in return. We are not for any trade that may mean the destruction of Canadian industry, but I will tell you also what we are for. That is an economilc conference of the component parts of the Empire, so we may discuss with other parts what they produce and we do not.”

AUSTRALIAN TREATY.

VANCOUVER, August 1.

The speeches by R. B. Bennett, on the Australian Treaty are arousing so much opposition as to amount to a complete cleavage between the Federal and Provincial Conservatives. For years, Mr Bennett has protested against the treaty, and is now renewing the opposition at various ports in British Columbia. There had been no attacks so far on the coast, where the great paper and salmon industries benefit enormously from the Australian markets. The Provincial Government has openly desired an extension of the treaty to cover lumber,' and would bitterly oppose the effort to reduce the present advantage of the agreement. Mr Bennett’s journalistic friends on the Coast also support the treaty. The Vancouver Province Conservative organ has warned the Tory Party not to meddle with the pact. METALS COMBINE. LONDON, August 1. The Financial News states that Sir R. 'S'. Horne has unfolded a huge scheme of consolidation of the Empire’s interests in non-ferrous metals, as such influential concerns. As the Burma corporation, Broken Hill group, Zinc Coroporation, British Metal Corporation are prominent participants, it will be appreciated that the supply of raw material is assured. The plan really forms an Empire ideal.
