HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, August 1. Lack of orders is the reason given for the closing down temporarily of some sawmills in this district. Included in these are the Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills Ltd, Perry’s mill, and Harris’ mill, Stuart and Chapman Ltd. at Ross is also idle through the same cause. The funeral of the late James Meharry took place on Tuesday last, when a large number of friends particularly of Kokatahi and Koiterangi, attended. The Rev. J. W. Hayward conducted the funeral service of the Presbyterian Church. The funeral of the late Denis O’Sullivan took place yesterday morning. There was a large cortege. At All Saints’ Church the hymn “Abide with Mo” was sung, and Miss Davies played the Dead March. The burial rites were conducted by the Rev. H. Nelson Wright, both at the church and the graveside. A number of floral tokens were sent by friends. Mr F. Turley addressed a meeting of sawmill workers at the Town Hall last night. There were several present, some expecting to get some amusement. The meeting was of a semiprivate nature.. Opossum-trapping appears to have been’ a lucrative occupation this season, some very good catches having been reported. Prices for skins have also been good. Some trappers have realised an average of 15/- each.
