WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, July 12. The annual meeting of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury Progress League was held last evening. Present; Di- Teichelmann (chairman), Messrs W. J. Butler, W. Wilson, W. Jeffries, T. W. Bruce, W. E. Richards, T. W. Duff. H.|G. F. Coles (hon sec). The report gave.a survey of the work carried out during the year ,and was adopted. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, reviewed the work of the year, which he considered very satisfactory. Mr Bruce seconded the motion. In supporting the motion Mr Jeffries thought the branch should be satisfied with the work done. In referring- to the visit of the Canterbury farmers, he said they were of the opinion, as ’well as local farmers, that the need in Westland is top-dressing. It was resolved that an effort be made to increase the membership of the League. It was resolved that the officers and committee be re-elected as follows :— President, Dr Teichelmann; vice-pre-sident, Mr Mclntosh ; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. G. F. Coles ; auditor, Mr Bruce. Executive—Messrs W. J. Butler, W. Jeffries. D. J. Evans, W E. Richards, T. W? Duff, A. G- Pilkington, W. Wilson, J. C. Macfarlane, T. W. Bruce, W. D. Mackay and Dew.

Dr Teicheljnann mentioned that a movement was afoot to request that a motor road be constructed from the Glacier Hotel, Waiho, to the foot of the Glacier. If it was meant to traverse the present road it would ruin its scenic beauty. The road is evidently advocated for the rapidly travelling tourist. He felt sure that those who had been over the road would vote unanimously against making the motor road. The proposal should be strenuously opposed. It was be like making a motor road through a conservatory. Horses are used by those- unable to walk the two and a-half miles. He moved that the Government be asked to think seriously before taking any steps in the matter. Mr W. Jeffries concurred with Dr Teichelmann, and considered it would be an act of vandalism to make a road along that track. He seconded the motion, which was carried.
