Mr. Thomas Benyon, one of the employees at Steel and Reedy’s sawmill, met with an accident last Monday, “whilst in the act of jacking up a log. with the result that he received a severe blow in the and a number of teeth were knocked out. Mr. R. Ford, who has been absent in Christchurch for some days, returned to Kumara on Friday. The local schools have closed for the term holidays. On Wednesday last the Minister for Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, who was accompanied by Mr. J. O’Brien, M.P., paid a visit to the Public School, being met by the Mayor, Chairman and’ some of the members of the School Committee. At the conclusion of his address to the children, Mr. Atmore announced that he had made arrangements foi’ a holiday, which announcement was received with applause. Mr. D. McLean, chairman of the Committee then brought' under the notice of the Minister the disabilities the children laboured under through not having a proper playground. The ground for the recreation of the children was the same to-day as it was fifty years ago, and he thought the Minister should give some assistance towards having some improvements carried out. The Minister was sympathetic and suggested the Committee forward a request, setting out their requirements, when the matter would be gone into. The Minister then paid a visit to the Convent School.
