NOTES ON THE TROTTING.

(Special to ‘‘Star.’’)

CHRISTCHURCH, April 20. The Improvers’ Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s Meeting to-day introduced to the public notice ,a two-year-old 'of outstanding merit, in Purser, who accounted for twenty-two opponents in the smart time of 3.31 3-5. He is by Man o’ War from that old racecourse favourite Succeed, and will be a dangerous rival to Ngingo Ngingo in the Ashburton Juvenile Stakes. Kelp, who was made a screaming hot favourite on his Cheviot form, just managed to. struggle into second place. Linkman improved vastly on any of his previous efforts by scoring a decisive win in the Durban Handicap, for which he was only in less demand than Evelyn Locanda. This pair were always well placed, and though Evelyn Locanda struggled on gamely under pressure, she had no chance with the West Coast-owned pacer, who covered the journey in 4.34 3-5. Wrackled went a poor race, and appeared to be feeling the effects of his strenuous campaign. The honours of the race rested with the trotter Trampfast, who made up handicap so solidly as to {finish close up in fourth place. Lady Cello, a half-sister to Author Jinks, was made .a strong order for the Harvest Handicap, but after being well placed .all through, just faded out over the last furlong. lone then drew clear and won comfortably from Tumatakuru and Wild Voyage. A furlong from the post Golden Author came down, bringing five others to grief. Fortunately none of the drivers was seriously hurt. Only Mountain Ore and Arikitoa were supported with any spirit for the Autumn Handicap, but the latter never flattered his backers. Mountain Ore apd Torchlight were responsible for. all the early running and fought out a desperate finish, which ended in favour of the latter by a head. Both these horses knocked 12 seconds off their handicap times, and backers of Torchlight collected a dividend of just upder half a century.

Though Arikitoa was handicapped at u 4 yards behind, he was, 4or some unaccountable reason, sent back to 84 yards mark.

yikota, wjao yv,ent out at an outside price, looked a winner of the Rakaia Handicap till within a furlong of the po.st, yvfiere she faded .out. By a phenomenal run oh the outside of his field, Author Jinks just got up in time to defeat Slump by a neck. It was a great performance op the part of the winner, and aroused the enthusiasm of tha crowd.
