MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

GREYMOUTH MAYORALTY

MR. GREENSLADE’S APPEAL “Evidently my work during the past two years has met with the approval of the citizens,” said th© Mayor of Greymouth (Mr J. W. Greenslade), who has been re-elected unopposed, when interviewed by a “Star” representative to-day. “Their decision to give me a further two years of office without opposition should presumably be taken as a compliment. Nevertheless, I should have welcomed competition. I would like to say this: The past two years were very trying, and I found them very wearying indeed. I will ask for a lead from the Council this year, if possible, with the object of lightening to a certain extent the duties, so that they will not entail the carrying out of what I contend does not come within the category of the Mayoral duties. As a matter of fact, the work has been so strenuous that the average man would not be able to stand up to it for any great length of

time. There are many functions, at which the Mayor is' called upon to preside, and exception is taken to his absence, at which the Patrons or Presidents of the various organisations concerned, could equally as well takej the chair, and thus relieve the Mayor considerably. “It will be my endeavour during the coming term to see that the town further improves. In the early stages of the new Council we will go into the matter of forming the different committees, and will endeavour to place the men most suitable on the appropriate committees for the carrying out of the many duties of the Council. We will make a strenuous effort during the next two years to improve further our roads and footpaths, in an endeavour to bring them into line with those of more modern towns. There is no doubt that considerable work has been done with regard to beautifying the town, and the thanks of the people are due par-' ticulariy to Cr F. A. Kitchingham and the Borough Gardener (Mr Cooper),

for the intense interest they have taken in this connection. The evidence of their splendid work is apparent to all. “The general work of the Council during the past two years will he given later in a comprehensive statement, to show in concrete form what has been accomplished; also a further financial statement, giving the ratepayers the fullest information.” NO CONTESTS AT RUNANGA. The municipal affairs of the Borough of Runanga are evidently not a matter of keen interest to the citizens, and not sufficient candidates were nominated yesterday to ensure an election on May 1. The Mayor (Mr. R. McTaggart) has been re-elected, unopposed. Only six candidates, the required number, were nominated for the Borough Council, and they have been declared duly elected, as follow: —A. J. Boddy, R. J. Armstrong, R. Southward, M. Malone, F. J. Oakley, and D. Swallow.

Mr. H. Duggan (the sitting member) was the only candidate for the position of Runanga representative on the Grey Power Board, and has been re. elected.

Mr. R. McTaggart (the sitting member) was returned unopposed as the representative of the combined Runanga and Brunner Boroughs on the Grey Hospital Board. “WALK-OVER” AT BRUNNER. There is . also a lack of competition for the positions offering in the Borough of Brunner. Mr J. Smeaton has been re-elected as Mayor, and as the representative on the Grey Power Board. The following Councillors have been declared elected, being the only candidates: T. Harper, J. B. Stevenson, W. Nimmo, and D. McIvor.

EXCEEDED HIS TERM.

/Special to “Star.”)

AUCKLAND, April 18. A curious situation has arisen in regard to Mr M. J. Coyle’s membership of the Auckland Hospital Board, it having been disclosed that he has occupied a seat on the Board for a year without authority. Through an oversight, Mr Coyle retained his seat from last May, when ordinarily he should have resigned. Mr Coyle has been a member of the Board for 23 years, and he resigned at Tuesday’s meeting. He represented, One Tree Hill, Mount Wellington and Mount Roskill road districts. According to law, the seat should have been vacated a year ago, and an election held by the road districts to fill the vacancy. This was not done, and since then Mr Coyle has continued on the Hospital-Board. In view of the present state of affairs, it is now the duty of the various road boards themselves, to fill the vacancy caused by Mr Coyle’s retirement, and no election will be held by residents. If the ■•Boards cannot agree on the point, the Minister of Health has the power to i appoint a member.
