SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S GRANT

ADELAIDE, March 24.

The Commission which investigated the disabilities suffered in South Australia, due to Federation, is favourable ’towards the State receiving a special grant. The money, which South Australia is seeking, is threequarters of a million sterling.

CLOUDBURST DAMAGE SYDNEY, March 25.

A Narrandera message states that a cloudburst occurred in the district. Storm waters from the watershed east of the town quickly formed a raging torrent, several chains wide in places. Dozens of houses were flooded to a depth of three feet. The fences and outbuildings were carried away and all public services disrupted. The storm was the worst in the history of the town. P. AND T. REVENUE. SYDNEY, March 23. The Post Office Department operations last year resulted in a loss of £230,663. The working expenses increased by £617,124, or by 5.91 per cent., totalling £111,028,632, while the earnings Were greater by 5.79 per cent. The postal branch showed a profit, but the telegraphs worked at a loss. Increases in salaries and superannuation were practically responsible for the Department’s unfavourable balance sheet.
