HORSE TRAINER INJURED. INVERCARGILL, March 22

Jack Cotter, aged 30, of Wingatui, a trainer, was admitted to Southland Hospital to-day, suffering from a broken thigh. He was riding a horse out to the Invercargill racecourse, when the animal apparently stumbled, unseating Cotter.

HEROES HONOURED. HAMILTON, March 21. -

A large gathering to-day honoured the memory of Thomas B. Dillicar, of Hamilton, and Clarence Hunter, of Te Awamutu, who lost their lives while engaged in rescue work in the surf at Kawhia Bay on January 9. The Mayor presented to the next-of-kin the medals and certificates awarded by the Royal Humane Society. TEACHER POISONED. CARTERTON, March 22. The inquest on the body of Claude Hector Olson, teacher at the Carterton school, who was found dead in the science room on March 9, was re-open-ed this afternoon, before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., Coroner. After hearing evidence, a verdict was returned that deceased met his death by accidental poisoning, mistaking a glass containing poison for water.

ATTACKED BY BULLS. AUCKLAND, March 23.

Two men. are in. the Auckland Hospital, as the result of being attacked by bulls yesterday, while engaged on farm work. They are Cecil Jenkinson, of Mount Roskill, single, aged 40, severe abdominal injuries, and it is believed fractured pelvis. His condition is serious; and Walford Fowler, aged 22, employed on Springthorpe station, near Mercer, severe abdominal injuries.

MINISTER’S TOUR., WAIHI, March 23.

The Minister for Public Works, now touring the Thames electorate, spent the best part of Friday in Waihi, receiving deputations and inspecting farm lands, including locked up lands as forestry reserves, which it is asked should be opened for settlement. Mr Ransom received deputations, the first regarding provision of relief works for tire unemployed of Waihi. The Minister promised to place twenty men at the earliest possible moment. With regard to idle lands, tire Minister agreed that much of this was suitable for dairying and grazing purposes and promised to put the matter before his colleagues, the Ministers for Lands and Forestry, for favourable consideration. He also promised backblocks farmers that a vote would be put on next Estimates to give improved access to their holdings in Waihi and Whangamata districts. Mr Ransom, who expressed himself both surprised and pleased with the progress of dairying in these parts, left for Thames late in the afternoon. LINCOLN SHEEP. MASTERTON, March 21. Attention was drawn at the annual meeting of the Lincoln Sheepbreeders’ Association of New Zealand to-day by the President, Mr. Duncan McGregor, to a report by Mr. J. A. Roberts, Chief Biologist to the British Research Association, who said that the wool manufacturers would like to see a return to Lincoln breeding, as in no other way can luminous bright wool be procured in quantity. McGregor said it behoved the Lincoln breeders to increase their flocks, so as to cope more easily with the greater demand for Lincoln breed wool.
