Miscellaneous: The Conservator of State Forests, Nelson, forwarded proposals by local bodies as under for the expenditure of fifths and tenths of revenue from State Forests :—Collingwood C.C. to 31.12.28 £9 7/8. Inangahua C.C. to 31.12.28 £57 17/11, Waimea C.C. to 31.12.28 5/9; total £67 11/4.— Resolved to approve the recommendation of the local body in each case. The Board also dealt with 26 items in committee.

HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, March 16. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Pefry), Crs Jas. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, W. Jeffries, E. W. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong, El Teichelmanu, D. J. Evans. An apology was received for the absence of Cr Heinz. A special meeting was first held to receive and approve of the District Electors’ List. The Mayor and Crs Teichelmann and Armstrong were appointed to sign same. The ordinary meeting was then held. Miss Margaret Agnew applied for consent to subdivide Sections 1160 and 1160 a, Brittan Street, and submitting plan of subdivision prepared by J. C. Macfarlane, Licensed Surveyor.—Plan approved. Miss Margaret Agnew, wrote asking whether the Council would consent to subdivision of Section 1161, which has a 66ft frontage, into two sections having a 26ft. frontage and a 40ft front* age, respectively.—Request refused. Mr W. H. Gifford, Hall Street, solicited the aid of the Council in respect of dilapidated building adjoining his property in Hall Street. —Referred to Reserves Committee. The Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, wrote advising that examination for Foreman and Overseers for certificates of competency under the Main Highways Board will be held in May, 1929. The Hon. Secretary, Athletic Sports Committee, applied for use of Cass Square for annual sports meeting to be held on Wednesday, April 3, and also for authority to charge 1 admission fees. —Request granted. The Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, advised that the personnel of the Hokitika Fire Board for the ensuing term is as follows: —Government representative, John Jerome Breeze; Elected by Fire-Insurance Companies: C. L. Green, F. C. Haycraft; Elected by the Hokitika Borough Council: Hon. Henry Leslie Michel, M.L.C., Albert Richard Elcock.

W. Connor, Slaughterman, Abattoirs wrote asking that interior of cottage be renovated, and that the verandah and fencing be renewed. On the motion of Cr King, seconded by Cr Jeffries, it was resolved to paint the woodwork of the Abattoir and renovate the cottage and paint same. The Borough Inspector applied for annual leave. —Granted, Town Clerk to make arrangements. Mrs Moore wrote asking permission to erect a verandah in Revell Street. —Granted. The Borough Overseer reported on

work carried out during the month. A vote of thanks was passed to the Borough staff for the excellent water supply maintained. The Abattoirs Manager (Mr J. Jarman) reported animals slaughtered during February: 20 cows, 27 heifers, 53 bullocks, 298 sheep, 74 lambs, 24 calves, 17 pigs; condemned, 1 cow, 1 pig. Fees received, £6B/0/6, compared with £67/13/0 for same period last year. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £270/11/0; payments £445/0/5; Credit balance £lO6/19/8, Accounts amounting to £244/4/5 were passed for payment. Tenders for renovating the gold lettering on the Cenotaph were received from Scott and Co., viz., £l7 10/-. It was resolved to hold consideration over. Tenders for printing the Borough roll were received from the Guardian and Timeg Coy. and W. E. Richards. That of the former being the lowest, was accepted. A petition, signed by numerous ratepayers for a poll on the question ' of Saturday half-holiday was referred to the Town Clerk to see if it is in order, and if so to make the necessary arrangements for the poll.
