RICCARTON NOTES. (Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. The Southern trainer, W. Stone, has had more than his fair share o 1 luck during the past fortnight, and it is doubtful if he will undertake the trip to Wingatui. On returning from Wellington Aspiring went wrong and subsequently Tommy Dodd developed lameness last Thursday, ine climax came when Silver Papei go cast in his box and sustained such injuries as to put him out of commission. This was a great misfortune, jas the son of Paper Money had been galloping such brilliant style as o give him a rare chance in the Publicans’ Handicap. Gillett has his two jumpers Charlatan and Wharncliffe in steady work with a view to the Autumn engagements. The former appears to be quite sound and if he remains so Should win some good cross-country .events. j Tr It is almost certain that Honoui will be given the opportunity of measuring strides with the best of the Commonwealth two-year-olds at the Randwick Autumn Meeting. He is hooked to leave next month and if R. J. Mason’s health is not good enough for him to undertake the trip his son, Percy may be in charge. Honour may be accompanied by Jalotix, .Agrion and a full brother to Episode. Since being recommissioined Agrion has come on nicely and it is only a ..question of his being wound up to trouble the best of the Australian cracks in weight for age events. Honour’s special missiion will be the Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes, worth 5000 sovs and 3000 sovs respectively. . Limerick will be accompanied to Wingatui by Toawai and Pasquito, bcth of whom have been showing improved form in their recent truck efforts. The champion has got through a satisfactory preparation and another couple of gallops at Wingatui should see him not far from his best. That promising colt Semper Paratus is suffering from cold, and will not make the trip to Wingatui. This Will reduce Sir Geo. Clifford’S team to Full Feather, Sudden Storm, Prickles and Impertinence. • . H. Nurse’s lot for Wingatui comprises Lancer, Rapier and Greyfinch, all of whom are in the best of health. Only for his slowness out of the barrier Rapier would have to be reckoned with in the Publicans’ Handicap. Nightmarch was responsible for another attractive gallop at Riccarton on Saturday, when he easily account°d lor Boat Geste over seven Imlongs an 1.30. The Derby winner promises to put up a great race in the Dunedin Cup, in which he will be ridden by C. Emerson. Word is to hand that Set Sail has again gone amiss and will not be required to race again. That speedy filly Dutch Money is amiss and is unlikely to fulfil her Dunedin engagements. On Monday morning Limerick was given his final gallop before leaving for Dunedin. He reeled olf seven fuiiGngs on the plough in brilliant style, .covering the journey in 1.28 3-5. W. Stone left for the South last evening with Silver Paper, Aspiring and Tommy Dodd, all of whom are amiss and though the first named is on the improve there is little chance oi him starting at Wingatui.

NEWS AND NOTES. Set Sail, one of the most consistent mares owned and trained in the South has bidden farewell to the race-track. After galloping well one morning last week one of her 'tendons showed signs of trouble, and it was deemed advisable to retire her immediately .rather than break her down altogether.

The daughter of Solferino —Strathpeffer will bo a decided acquisition to the matrons’ paddock, as she has the .blood, and looks the part to make a successful brood mare. Another one in the South to feel the effects of hard training is the Greyspear gelding Bilbo. He had been working well and was a certain starter in the Dunedin Cup had he not gone wrong in his off hind leg, which will probably keep him in retirement for a considerable period.

It is understood that A. Tinker will not be able to make the trip to Wingatui to ride Aussie in his engagements, and that R. S. Bagby will have the mount. Aussie’s chances will not suffer through the change of riders. Star Raid, a member of Miss Doyle’s team, put up a brilliant gallop at Riccarton on Saturday morning by covering six furlongs in the good time of 1.14 3-5. Riccarton punters will remember this when the field parades for the Berwick Handicap on Thursday next, in which event he is to be ridden by A. E. Ellis. The prospects of the Derby winner Nightmarch must not be discarded when the field parades for the Dunedin Cup on Thursday next. He is very well at present, is doing great track work, and is to be ridden by E. Emerson.

Speculators experienced a bad day at the Addington trots on Saturday last, only one favourite saluting the judge for first honours- —Lindbergh in the Juvenile Handicap. Double figure dividends were returned on four occasions. In spite of these reverses backers were undismayed, and the returns show that the turnover was very little short of last year’s. Locally owned High Jinks continues on his winning way. His victory in the Papanui Handicap on Saturday was his most important to date, and the price returned was of the remunerative order. In running second to Royal Serene the American imported stallion Travis Axworthy registered his best effort to date. His time, 4.34 2-5 from a 4.38 mark, was particularly good, as he was always on the outside of two or three opponents. , At the meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association on Friday, the action of the Westland Trotting Club in having fined A. Bryce £5 5/- for careless driving in the Kanieri Handicap at the Summer meeting was endorsed.
