EX-FARMER’S DEBTS

PAYMENT TO CREDITORS

At the Greymouth Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M., Wm. Green, a judgment debtor to W. D. Munro for £4 Is 6d was examined. He stated that he was married, with two children, and had earned £5 weekly since March 13, 1928, when judgment was given. In 1927 he had walked off a farm owing over £2OO. He had distributed £25 pro rata amongst his creditors and Munro had received 30/-. Since then the creditors had been offered 30/- a week to share amongst them and Munro was the c®ly one who had not accepted it. Mr. W. J. Joyce asked for an order. Green said that the trouble was that if an order was made, other creditors would also get them and he would then be unable to pay off his debts, which amounted to about £2lO.

The Magistrate: It would take you two years to pay off the liabilities. Do you mean to say that all your creditors, except Munro, have agreed to share 30/- a week. —Well, they have not all agreed but they have said nothing against it. Munro is one of the smallest creditors. After explaining that he paid 35/- a week rent and had two boarders, but only temporarily, Green was. asked whether he could pay Munro at the rate of 5/- a month. He replied that he was afraid he coul dnot. Munro had 30/- paid off the account for £4, which was a bigger proportion than any of the rest had received. He was prepared tp do what he could. An amount of £25 was owing to the Repatriation Department for furniture, and it was being paid off at tho rate of £1 a month. When making, an order for payment of the amount due to Munro at the rate of 5/- per month, the Magistrate pointed out that it wpuld take 16 months to liquidate the debt.
