KUMARA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.)

A sad accident resulting in death,

occurred on Monday morning last to Peter Bernard Kennedy, 31 years of age, the son of Mr and Mrs Kennedy, Seddon Street. The little fellow, unnoticed, was swinging on a wire, stretched across the kitchen fireplace, when it broke, throwing the child into the fire, and upsetting a kettle of boiling water on him, inflicting painful injuries. Medical aid was summoned, and although everything possible was done, the boy died on Wednesday evening. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the Rev. Father Lordan officiating at the graveside. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved parents. Some mischievous person entered the fire station during the week, and deliberately cut a large gash in the new fire hose, recently imported from England. It is hoped the police will do their utmost to discovei’ the offender. Mr A. Vlach, who was taken suddenly ill on Sunday last, is reported to be improving. A meeting of sawmillers and citizens took place in the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening to discuss ways and means for holding the annual sawmillers’ picnic. Mr McLean presided. It was decided to, hold the picnic in Cunningham’s paddock, Taipo, on February 16, on similar lines to that of

the previous year. The lorry owners of the town have signified their willingness to place eight lorries on the road foi' the transport of visitors, so, given a fine day, the outing should be pleasant. It was decided to charge adults only 2/- each. Tea, milk and sugar will be provided free, and the children will be especially provided for. Mr L. Dewe was elected secretary. Miss Burns, who for many years resided in Kumara, is on a visit to the town, renewing old associations. Miss Burns, who has resided in Auckland for the past 20 years, intends remaining on the Coast foi- some time. Mr A. G. Woods, who is in Christchurch, is said to be slowly recovering from his recent serious operation. Kumara is not suffering from any lack of amusement at the present time, for, in addition to the usual weekly picture show, the Lynch Family performed before a good house last night, whilst the World’s Entertainers, under the direction of J. C. Williamson, are billed for Saturday night week. Mr Martyn, of Sydney, brother of Mr E. Martyn, of the Empire Hotel, is on a visit to Kumara.
