REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.)

REEFTON, January 12.

Yesterday morning’s gale did little damage to the Inangahua district although the creeks were flooded and the Inangahua River was carrying a considerable quantity of water. The rainfall was .85 inches and near Arnolds a slip has occurred on the Buller Road which has considerably hampered traffic. The fall at Little Hawke’s Craig has been cleared away and cars can get right through. A firm of.Reefton business people has been a sufferer from cargo pilferers recently when a case containing tobacco was found to have 60 tins taken from it during transit. Losses of this kind especially in tobacco, makes shipments very unprofitable. Favorable comment was expressed at the starting at the recent meeting of the Reefton Jockey Club. On the first day, especially in the Hurdles the despatches were not quite a success. Heisler whipped around when the word to go was given, but the fields were got away sharp to time, very promptly and on the second day no fault could be found with any of the starts. Mr. Roche of Westport is to be congratulated on the sccess of his initial effort.

Dairying has now become one of the staple industries of this district as can be seen by the amount paid out on Thursday by the Golden Coast Co-operative Dairy Coy. to suppliers, the total £4,145/18/3 being distributed. Reefton suppliers received £3,358/19/11 and Maruia £786/14/-. It is estimated that over £20,000 will be paid out for this season, and should the farmers go in for improved pastures and a proper system of herd testing there is no reason why this 'amount should not be increased as the plant at the factory can handle without difficulty, a much larger quantity and a reduction would thus be made in overhead expenses. Mr. Anthony Bonetti and his wife are on a visit to Reefton.

Mrs. Montgomerie, who has been on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Gorthard of Westport, left for her home at Piriaka on Thursday.
