ROTORUA’S MISHAP
RETURNING TO WELLINGTON.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 12. The Rotorua, which sailed on Thurs- , day for England, with sixty-five passengers, and carrying a large cargo of dairy produce, frozen meat and wool, radioed yesterday she is returning to port, owing to the discovery of a leak in the packing of the stern gland of the starboard propellor shaft. There is no cause for anxiety. LATER. When the Rotorua was 180 miles from Wellington the leak was discovered in the stern gland of the starboard propeller. She turned back owing to the impossibility of effecting repairs at sea. Although a considerable amount of water entered through the damaged gland, the two pumps were sufficient to control the inflow, and both engines were worked at normal. A diver made an inspection this morning, and assisted the engineers to remove the gland. It is expected that the Rotorua will be ready to resume her voyage this afternoon. On her last visit to England, the packing in the glands of both propellers was renewed. CORINTHIC DELAYED. WELLINGTON, January 12. The Corinthic, expected next Monday, has radioed that she will not arrive till daybreak next Thursday.
