JEWELLERY STOLEN. DUNEDIN, January 11.

James Ernest Foote was arrested on a charge of breaking into the shop of Frederick Townsend, and stealing jewellery valued at £3OO. He was remanded till January 18.

The appointment is gazetted to-night of Justices Herdman and Ostler as an Election Committee, to hear the petition of John William McAulay, of Okaihau, farmer, against the return of Harold Montague Rushworth as Member of Parliament for the Bay of Islands. •1 FATAL FALL. WELLINGTON, January 11. A young man, Frederick Ivan Eaton, fell from the balcony of a house in Palmer Street last night. His neck was broken. He had gone out there with three other companions for fresh air. Deceased was a member of the Old Boys’ Senior Eleven and Senior Association football playing for the Y.M.C.A.

MARSH GAS.

GISBORNE, January 11

When drilling a well at the Patutuhi sub-station of the Waikaremoana hydro-electric scheme, the contractor tapped a supply of gas at 80 feet, which shot a column of water 25ft into the air. The water was bubbling with gas, the nature of which has not been ascertained, though it is probably marsh gas, such as has' been found and utilised elsewhere on Poverty Bay flats.

FIRE AT BLENHEIM. BLENHEIM, January 11.

J. J. Wensley’s furniture factory, a brick building in High Street, was completely destroyed by fire at 2.30 this morning. When discovered the flames had complete charge of the whole building, and the brigade had no chance of saving either the building or contents, which were a total loss. A house adjoining was slightly damaged. The damage is estimated at over £6OOO. The insurances totdl £3OOO, as follows: —Building £l5OO, machinery £750, stock £750 (all in the Liverpool, London and Globe).

BOYS MISSING. NAPIER, January 11.

Grave alarm is felt here for the safety of two sons.of the Rev. N. J. and Mrs Oxbrow of Hastings. The two boys, Len aged 10 and Roy aged seven, went fishing at Haumoana yesterday morning, and have not been seen since. A shirt and a small pair of pants were found by a search party on the, banks of the Tukituki River. Mr Oxbrow is at present visiting Auckland. LATER. The body of Len Oxbrow was recovered from the river. No sign of the other boy has been seen.
